Celebrating Christmas after moving to Adelaide

December 28, 2013

Moving to Adelaide has been a very exciting process for your family – the kids are making new friends in school, the adults are enjoying the Australian lifestyle although the job hunt can be frustrating at times – but all in all, you don’t regret your decision to move to Adelaide.

The family has settled in and you are about to experience your first Christmas in Adelaide. For those who originate from Europe or the Northern Hemisphere, the joys of a “White Christmas” will be a distant memory, as you bask in the hot summer sun. It is not uncommon for the mercury to hover over the 30°C mark (and sometimes even above 40°C) during the Christmas season in Adelaide !

Christmas in Adelaide is kicked-off in early November each year by the Christmas Pageant that takes place in the Adelaide city centre. It is a parade that loops over more than 3km, comprising over 50 floats, with bands, clowns, dancing groups and numerous performers, culminating in the appearance of Santa, who then proceeds to his Magic Cave at the David Jones building in Rundle Mall. Thousands of people of all ages line the route to cheer and share in the exuberance of the event.

Besides the Christmas Pageant, try to attend the smaller pageants organised by your local council. The floats and participants of these parades are sponsored by local community groups or businesses, and it is great fun to witness the camaraderie of your local neighbourhood. Make it a fun day out with friends and family, as the children will certainly enjoy the spectacle of the colourful sights and sounds.

Moving to Adelaide is also an opportunity to participate in the Adelaide Christmas spirit. Many proud house owners will go to great lengths to decorate the exterior of their house and lawns with myriad Christmas lights, ornaments and decorations – resulting in a spectacular vision of dancing fairy lights and whimsical Santa Clauses or reindeers moving sedately (albeit mechanically) on a balmy night. Invest in Christmas lights and other decorations during the post-Christmas sales, and let your creative side revel in the possibilities.

Meanwhile, a must-see is the Lights of Lobethal Festival held annually during the month of December. You should also check with your local council for information or a map setting out the many locations in the neighbourhood where the Christmas lights are installed. “The North Pole” at Leewood Court in Paradise is always worth visiting.

In addition, take the opportunity to join the Carols by Candlelight or Carols in the Park organised by your local council. You will find that by moving to Adelaide, you have more time to connect with your family and friends. Take a picnic basket and enjoy the crisp evening air with your loved ones, while you join in with the hundreds around you as everyone belts out the evergreen carols of your youth. These events are usually sponsored by the local Rotary Club or similar charitable organisation – so give generously to those who are less fortunate.

Finally, celebrate your move to Adelaide by ushering in a new year with a Bang! Fireworks extravaganza can be witnessed in various locations around Adelaide on New Year’s Eve – Elder Park in Adelaide city centre, Glenelg and Semaphore. There are usually free concerts to entertain the masses before the count-down to the new year.

Welcome2Adelaide wishes one and all, the peace and joy of this Christmas season. May the year ahead bring much personal satisfaction and fulfilment – as you celebrate your new life after moving to Adelaide.

Welcome2Adelaide is ready to assist in any way to ensure that moving to Adelaide is an inclusive and satisfying process for your family.
